Kukui is the baseboard for MT8183 Chromebook tablets. Jacuzzi, which is based on kukui, is the baseboard for MT8183 chromebook laptops. One strange quirk with kukui is the coreboot bootblock is stored in the RO ec firmware region. The MT8183 SoC can't natively boot from SPI flash storage, but can boot from eMMC. The ec emulates a specific part of the eMMC specification to send the bootblock to the SoC on boot. The bootblock loads the rest of coreboot from SPI flash.
Hardware quirks
Kukui boards share the following general quirks among them:
- Relatively unstable SuzyQ connectivity; It's really easy to get a raiden_debug_spi connection to fail here, often requiring several retries. Issuing a
reboot_ec
command right before a flash sometimes helps. - Loud whine after resuming from suspend if audio playback occured during shutdown. Seemingly caused by any process holding the audio device open (
killall pipewire
fixes it for me). Can be quite scawy
